Maple Syrup Festival

March break is here! Spring is so near! A great time for our little ones to enjoy some activities, relax and have fun with the whole family. Last year when I was 8 months pregnant with Julia, we tried Maple Syrup Festival for the first time. I'm sharing to you all the fun and I hope you will try this too!

Guided Maple Syrup Walk. A bit of history on who and how they started collecting sap from the maple trees. Everybody seems to be interested and looking forward for more storytelling ...

Maple syrup demonstrations.Complete with their costumes and props, we're delighted to watched them... After collecting the sap, a fire is built in the pit with dried split woods. It will take long hours to boil the sap before it turn into syrup.

My boys were sneaking at the bucket attached to the maple tree. Probably wondering how could it produce such yummy sweet syrup.

The last part of the tour... maple syrup tasting. Come one,come all! Have the best tasting maple syrup ever!

Trivia from the maple syrup man... Collecting Sap

As sap drips from the spile it is collected in a container. Native people used bowls made of clay,bark or wood to collect sap. European colonists introduced the use of wooden buckets and metal pails.

Today sap can be piped directly from the tree to the sugar shack using plastic vacuum tubes.

Horse Drawn Wagon Ride. Waiting for the wagon to come, we still have ample time to look around!

Pony Rides. For an additional fee, kids get a chance to ride a pony, Joshua is enjoying it!

Petting Zoo. With an additional fee for the food, kids have the chance to feed these lovely animals!

Face Painting. Added attraction for kids plus additional fee...

Kids will also enjoy the Children's Music Show where they can participate and sing along too!

And the best part is eating pancakes, sausages with maple syrup!

Don't forget to visit their bazaar for some treats and see the modern method of making maple syrup.

There are a few hotels and casino jobs available for our fellow Filipinos here in Canada. There are more jobs that are in the health industry such as nurses, caregivers, and medical technicians. Skilled workers are also in great demand such as machine operators, mechanics and construction workers.

I know that there are a lot our fellow Filipinos who would like to apply for jobs here in Canada or in other parts of the world thinking that life would be much better. That is true, although not always. Getting an online job offers quite a lucrative income too. It’s probably just not that easy especially since some jobs can’t actually be done online.

But for those who are interested, there are jobs such as medical transcription, financial transcription, administrative support, customer support, help desk support, online casino dealers, and other jobs that are available online. All you have to do is research and find the right companies or agencies to work with to get started. I believe this is a more cost-effective way instead of having to wait several years for a visa to be granted. And this way, you don’t have to live far away from your family and friends. No more having to deal with being homesick, and no adjusting to the climate and culture too.

Then again, this is just one of the options. Of course, you have to make a decision based on what you think will be best for you, and for your family. A little sacrifice will have to be made either way.

Travelling in the Philippines is a lot of fun. There are a lot of places to visit, each different from one another. From breath-taking mountains, picturesque sunsets, beautiful beaches..name it, and you can see it.

The Philippines isn't really a very rich country, and there aren't too many TV advertisements about the different places you can visit. One of the ways we know of these places are through postcards and flyers. I remember when I was still very young, our teachers would ask us to find postcards of the different tourist spots here in the Philippines. It was through those postcards that sparked our interest. And until now, it is still a very effective way to market the many natural wonders in our country. I know it's effective because even the foreigners who visit our country would buy these postcards with the magnificent pictures of the different places and send these to relatives. I guess the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" holds true in this case. For I know it is through the pictures and postcards that locals and foreigners find the hidden wonders and the beautiful spots to visit.

And hey, call me old-fashioned but I also get attracted to visit places outside the country because of the pictures and the postcards that I receive. The postcards tell the story behind each place, and it's very inviting especially when the photo used is one that captures the heart of what the place represents. I just wish there were more postcards now.

At last im back on the track,writing new entries again. I been inactive for a while due to morning sickness from my first trimester of pregnancy. Yes! I am pregnant again for the third time...
Better late than never... I would like to share with you some photos from our apple picking adventure, which we started two years ago when I was pregnant with my second son. It was a fun-filled moment especially for those who have not seen a pretty apple tree before. I am talking about my husband...lol! I've seen some apple trees when I was in Germany and It was amazing! I never missed the chance to have my picture taken with my Mom for the first time. Wish I have that photo with me now because it was so funny! When I was a kid, it was one of my dream to see a real apple tree. Anyway just reminiscing the past a little bit. ...
Apple picking usually starts early Fall from September- October where a lot of apple orchards open their doors to visitors. The adventure usually starts on a wagon ride, as you pass by the different variety of apples, you will be able to choose which one you like to pick as the wagon operator introduces each variety. By the way admission is free, you need to buy a plastic bag and enjoy picking your own apple and eat it too!

We are looking forward till the next visit to the apple farm next year, by then it will be two kids and a baby!

Cherry Picking at the Farm

There was an invitation for a bus group tour for $22.00/head transportation fee going
to Cherry Avenue Farm, to Floral Clock the final stop would be in Niagara Falls.

Giving birth in Canada

Balik tanaw....My post dated July 2007 Buntis pa ako...
"hi. the first problem you might encounter is how to find a family doctor, who would refer her you to an OB Gyne practitioner. kasi nga palaging fully booked na sila. and then yung OHIP kapag wala pa, you have to pay cash everytime may check up.
I have waited for a month bago ako nabigyan ng schedule sa OB, finally etong tuesday lang ako nakapunta. Ang ginawa ng Doctor, assessment ng previous medical records, ultrasounds results from my previous OB, laboratory test, konting question and answer, sa madali't salita chika chika lang...
at kahit pala 5 mos pregnant ako may paps smear pala? Which is very unusual di ba? Ayun pay ako ng $110.00 ng hindi man lang check heartbeat ng baby or position nya. Mabuti na lang alam ko ok naman na ok kasi malikot talaga ang baby sa tiyan ko.
I assumed na yung siningil sa akin was sort of acceptance fee na lang at least pampalubag loob na may OB na ako.Plus may schedule na ako sa hospital ng CS operation ko coming november.
Tapos ang laboratory asus ang dami din. lupaypay ako lumabas ng lab sa dami ng dugo nawala sa akin, dahil kailangan din ng bagong records. pay na naman ako ng $55.00
madugo pala talaga...
next month sana naman mareduce na yung fee...
by September covered na ako ng OHIP kaya worry free na..."

Ang Kuwento...
Ang panganay ko ay ipinanganak sa Pilipinas... Sa MCU Hospital, Caloocan City, via caesarian section headed by Dra. Neth Carino...Ang isa sa pinakamagaling at pinakamabait na OB Gyne na nakilala ko...dahil until now tumatawag pa rin ako sa kanya kapag may issues ako regarding OB matters.Gumastos kami ng 60,000 pesos sa hospital bills that was December of 2005...And I recommend MCU kasi malinis at maayos ang paligid ng hospital at mapagkakatiwalaan nag mga staff according to my experience...

Dahil nga four months preggy na ako when we landed June 12, 2007...Maraming bagay ang dapat naming i-consider naming mag-asawa...Ang effectivity ng (OHIP ) Ontario Health Insurance Plan ay three months upon landing...Marami kasing sakop ang OHIP isa na doon ay free consultation, laboratory services, hospitalization at marami pang iba.... Isipin mo na lang na kung hindi pa kami covered kailangan namin magbayad for every pre-natal check ups at laboratory ko...at kahit na yung cost ng buong panganganak ko.
Finally nag September at covered na ako sa lahat ng gastusin, ipapakita ko na lang ang OHIP card at sila na ang bahala...
Ang OB-Gyne ko na si Dr. Karen Tessler ay isang mabait at napakamalumanay na doctor...Tuwing may check up ako mas matagal pa ang byahe ko sa subway papunta sa clinic nya sa Downtown kesa sa tagal ng stay at consultation ko na hindi tatagal ng 10 minutes...Pero ganun sila talaga di masyadong machika, basta ok ang result ng laboratory test every check up, at wala kang dinadaing na kakaiba, tapos na... See you next month na ulit!Last check up ko two weeks prior to my operation, may instructions na syang binigay sa akin, pamphlet saang department ng hospital, ano dadalhin at mga bilin...Dahil nga Elective Caesarian ako nagpaschedule na sya kung kelan ako manganganak...November 14 ang labas ng baby ko.
St. Michael's Hospital Toronto.... The "big" day! 8am nagpunta kaming mag-asawa para mag check-in.
Mababait din ang staff.. Pinuntahan kami ng Anaesthesiologist para i-discuss sa akin ang procedure ng paglagay ng anaesthesia..At pagdating sa mismong operating room nandoon na ang team ng nurses at doctors...Nasa tabi ko ang aking mister nagbibigay ng moral support..Ang hirap manganak sa ibang bayan pero nandoon ang assurance na magiging maayos ang lahat....
Dahil may extended health insurance si Mister sa work nya na-upgrade namin ang room sa semi-private. Dalawang pasyente lang mag-share, may sariling washroom, phone at tv. May higaan din para sa bantay.Well monitored din ang pasyente palaging may bumibisitang mga nurses para i-monitor ang vital signs namin ni baby. At may buzzer din in case kailangan mo sila.

Breastfeeding ang number one nilang pinopromote for new mommies pero ako nagsabi ng mixed feeding ang gagawin ko kay baby... free din naman ang milk formula habang nasa hospital..Well provided talaga lahat.Ang food ko depende rin sa diet na recommended sa pasyente at may menu checklist pa sila just in case gusto mong maiba naman...
On my second day, pinaligo na ako...Nakakapagtaka di ba? Sa atin sa Pinas naglalangis na ang buhok ko pero ayon sa matatanda mabuti ng mag-ingat kesa mabinat at baka maloka....
Wala na nga pala ako sa Pinas...Iba dito....At walang naging problema dahil hindi naman ako naloka! O matagal na akong luka luka sabi ng asawa ko... =)
Apat na araw kami sa hospital...Wala ni isang kusing na ginastos pambayad sa lahat... Masarap ngang manganak dito...

Pag-uwi ng bahay may tumatawag pa rin na mga nurses at health workers nagtatanong kung
gusto kong madalaw sa bahay para magbigay ng suporta para isang bagong mommy...Baka dumadaan ako sa depression o kailangan kong may kaagapay sa pag-aalaga sa baby kahit sa saglit na oras...
Nagpapasalamat ako at kahit wala ang aking mga magulang at iba pang pamilya sa tabi ko, naging maayos kaming mag-asawa sa isang yugto ng aming buhay dito sa Canada...

Ito ang kuwento ko sa aking favorite tambayan forum ni Kuya Lou... Dalawang taon na nakakaraan at masarap magbalik tanaw... Hiniram ko muna para mai-share ko din sa inyo ang pinagdaanan namin noong bago kami sa Canada on our own... Four months preggy ako kaya ganyan....=)

Kuwento mula sa bagong salta sa Toronto...June 12, 2007

My husband and I arrived here last June 12 ....Araw ng Kalayaan ng mga Pinoy!
Sinundo kami ng husband ng friend ni mister na napakabait at sila ang una naming pamilya dito. Sila rin nag asikaso ng aming accomodation. Mabuti na lang may friendster, kaya nakita ni hubby ex-officemate nya sa dating work. At dahil alanganin, nag- rent muna kami ng room hanggang end ng June. mabait naman si Landlord.
On our first day, maagang gumising, syempre excited lumabas ng bahay kasi maganda weather parang Baguio eh. Punta ng grocery para may makain kami, at ang mister ko walang ginawa kundi i-convert sa peso ang mga items sa store.
Later sinundo kami ng friend nya at ikot ikot muna within the area then diretso HRSDC to get SIN. Open pa rin kami bank account pwede pala dito kahit walang deposit. basta before mag isang buwan lagyan na ng pera kasi may mga charges na daw. At ang OHIP hanapan pa kami ng proof of residency, kaya wait namin bank statement para ipakita address. Wala naman daw problem basta sa September covered na kami.
On our 3rd day bumisita naman ang aking Tito at Tita from US, they checked us out kung ok lang kami and they brought a lot of stuff from kitchenwares to linens, at pocket money na rin. Libre kami ng kain for 3 days kasi lagi kami sabit sa pasyal. Talagang tourist mode muna while nag-aapply si Mister ng work through internet.Kaya importante na nakabili kami laptop at dun nakasalalay ang kinabukasan namin dito...
On our fourth day, Awa ng Diyos may schedule ng interview si Mister kaya tuwa naman ako... first time mag neck tie kaya feeling gwapo si loko
He decided to give it a try na maghanap for at least a month ng work na linya nya talaga which is IT. Kapag hindi pa umayon ang swerte then apply siya kahit ano survival work.
Positive naman ang interview but he had to travel for two hours kasi medyo malayo sa place namin, at the same time bus at subway palang kaya eh...Set ulit for another interview the following week pero phone interview naman from one of the managers in Montreal. hehe...nakalusot na naman si pogi. That same week may schedule ulit sya for another interview this time with the President of the company. So yung pinakamagandang polo at suit pinasuot ko. hehe...
Teka...puro supporting lang role ko dito sa kwento ko ha!
Pag-uwi sa house, wait nya raw ulit email ng HR to set his 4th interview...ha?!!!! Asked ko agad sino naman interview sa iyo this time? Board of directors? hehe... Natawa na lang kami pareho. imagine isang company aabot ng 4 interviews?
Finally nung wednesday panel interview naman daw ginawa sa kanya. then kinausap ulit sya ng President ng company at nagbigay ng job offer na mahirap tanggihan. So pag-uwi ng bahay at sinabi sa akin ang good news pati baby ko sa loob ng tyan sumisipa sa tuwa at last may work na ama nya.hehe...
Later on may mga emails pa siya from other companies at agencies na dumating pero sobrang pasalamat na kami dahil malaking blessing work nya sa amin at the same time linya nya talaga.
Nakuha na rin namin SIN card on our 2nd week at PR card on our 3rd week. mabilis din po...
Yung mga nandito na naghahanap ng work at antay pa ng interview konting pasensya muna at darating din swerte, medyo inuna lang ni Lord si Mister dahil mas matindi pangangailangan namin ngayon. ala pa kami OHIP at mahal pa daw check up ko sa OB...dahil dami test gagawin sa akin.
Pero in fairness nung 2nd week namin, nagpunta kami sa kababayan community center very accomodating naman sila. Asked lang kami contact numbers ng mga family doctors dito dahil nga bago mahirap kumuha ng doctor lalo na wala pa OHIP. Yung isang tinawagan ko pinoy sabi puno na daw sila kaya nirefer nila ako kay Dr. Ben Pangilinan. Sobrang bait nya kasi hindi na nya kami siningil ng consultation fee! Naawa siguro sa amin... Sila na rin naghanap ng OB ko at may schedule na ako ng check up this 3rd week of July. Kaya lang sinabihan na kami medyo malaki gastos dahil may ultrasound pa ako. Sana marami pang pinoy na katulad nila na makakatulong sa mga bago katulad namin...
btw,nakalipat na rin kami dito sa one bedroom basement apartment same house na tinuluyan namin.maganda naman kasi italian neighborhood. yung landlord mabait din, Romanian guy at single pa.Maingay lang paa kapag naglalakad kaya minsan aga kami nagigising eh. Isip ko nga sana mapatid para madala.hehehe...
Comment nya lang bakit daw everytime punta sya dito sa amin sa basement palagi kami kumakain. gusto ko sabihin eh wrong timing lagi punta mo that's why! joke lang... Iba talaga pinoy, hilig kumain... masaya kausap...
Mas madaling mag-adjust dito lalo na kapag kasama ang family... kapag may goal ka palaging positive tingin sa future.marami din mababait na pinoy dito.
Sa mga nasa pinas pa, don't worry darating din time na kayo naman magkukwento ng mga experiences nyo once landed na kayo. Kami we've waited for 6 long years, habang nandyan sa pinas tuloy lang ang buhay at mag ipon ng pandagdag sa settlement funds. enjoy muna buhay dyan with friends and family at pagdating dito ibang level na...
Basta wag lang tayo padadala sa mga negative remarks na maririnig natin to avoid disappointments at dasal lang. Ako siguro kapag may chance mag-aaral muna ko to improve my skills or try bagong trabaho kaya lang baka next year pa. ang target namin mag-asawa makasama na namin yung 1 1/2 year old namin anak sana ngayong taon na ito...
kaya fulltime wife and mommy muna ako...

God is really good... ang baon namin dito puro pangarap at hopefully unti unti magkatotoo... basta stay positive kahit minsan feeling natin medyo bumibigay na tayo, dami na natin pinagdaanan na hirap, just try to hold on... dahil palagi binibigay ni God what is really best for us... kapag nameet nyo na mga matatagal na dito sa Canada mas matutuwa kayo sa mga achievements nila, at bibilib kayo sa mga pinagdaanan nila bago nakapag established ng magandang buhay dito. hanggang sa susunod na post po ulit... smile tayo palagi...
